Project Directorate on Poultry, a constituent of Indian Council of Agricultural Research has been established in March, 1988 in Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Primarily, the Directorate aims at developing superior germplasm of chicken with high potential for egg and meat production, through an organised network of centres under an All India Coordinated Research projects (AICRP’s) located in different State Agricultural Universities and at an ICAR institute.The emergence of AICRP’s on Poultry Breeding dates back to IV Five Year Plan and was monitored by a coordinating unit, located at Central Avian Research Institute, Izatnagar.This was subsequently elevated to the status ofProject Directorate in 1988.The Directorate co-ordinates, monitors and evaluates the breeding programmes of AICRP centres and also undertakes specific research programmes at its headquarters in Breeding, Nutrition and Health on promising lines developed at its centres. |
