The Indian Council of Agricultural Research has launched
several research programmes for the development of Indian Agriculture. Amongst them All India Coordinated Research
Project (AICRP) on Poultry Improvement has contributed significantly for the development
and release of high yielding egg and meat strain crosses for commercial exploitation. Under
this programme strains were developed for better performance and adaptability under
tropical climatic conditions. One of the promising synthetic strain crosses which has been
improved at Project Directorate on Poultry (ICAR), Rajendranagar, Hyderabad is the
Krishibro. The male and female parents of
this strain have been obtained from AICRP, Ludhiana and their performance was improved
over eight generations by subjecting them for higher juvenile body weight. In the male parent line, emphasis was given for
conformation and high fertility and the female parents for good egg production and
hatchability. The commercials from these parents are called krishibro and they attain body
weight by 6 weeks of age with less than 2.2 feed conversion ratio. Krishibro can
perform well on the diets containing relatively low nutrient concentration compared to the
other commercial broilers available in market. The survivability of this bird upto
6 weeks of age is around 97%. These birds have attractive colour plumage and are
well adapted to tropical weather conditions. The commercial Krishibro has high
immonucompetence against the common poultry diseases like Ranikhet and Infectious bursal
disease. The commercial
chicks or hatching eggs of Krishibro can be obtained from the Project Directorate on
Poultry on advance payment
