Parthenium Awareness Week

                Observation of 'Parthenium Awareness Week'

Parthenium Awareness Week’ was organised by ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad during 16-22 August, 2019. Parthenium hysterophorus (Family: Asteraceae), locally called gajar ghas is an alien weed which entered into India along with wheat imported from USA in the early 1950s. Since then it has spread alarmingly and invaded about 35 million hectares of land throughout the country including Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep. Parthenium is a poisonous, pernicious problematic, allergic and aggressive weed posing a serious threat to human beings and livestock. This weed is notorious to cause many diseases like skin allergy, hay fever, breathing problems in human beings and animals besides reducing agricultural productivity loss of biodiversity.

In view of the seriousness and magnitude of the threat posed by this weed, ICAR- Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR) observed 'Parthenium Awareness Week’ during 16-22 August, 2019 to make farmers and general public aware about the menace of Parthenium, which is responsible for causing health problems in human beings and animals, besides deteriorating environment, loss of productivity and biodiversity.  ICAR-DPR organised activities for Parthenium uprooting in the campus during the week. A rally was also organised in the institute for spreading awareness regarding harmful effects of parthenium and importance of its uprooting.  Most of the staff participated in the activity.

 Twenty one  tribal farmers who were under going training on backyard poultry farming under TSP programme were also trained on identifying Parthenium plant, harmful effects of the plant and the importance of  uprooting them. Farmers were also advised to grow fast growing crops like sorghum to suppress the growth of parthenium in their filed. Other control methods like spraying herbicides biological control measures etc.  were also explained to the farmers.

Training to tribal farmers

Training on “Backyard Poultry Rearing” to tribal farmers under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP)

ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad introduced rural/ backyard chicken farming under Tribal Sub Plan Program with an aim to improve the income and living standards of tribal farmers. To impart scientific knowledge on backyard poultry management to the tribal farmers, training on “Backyard Poultry Rearing” was organized during 20-21 August, 2019 at ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad. A total of 21 tribal farmers (18 women and 3 men farmers) from Mankapur and adjoining villages of Adilabad district participated in the programme. Dr.R.N.Chatterjee, Director, DPR interacted with the tribal farmers and highlighted the advantage of rearing improved backyard chicken varieties towards doubling the farmer’s income. Farmers were provided with training kit including extension literature in vernacular language on package of practices for rearing backyard chicken varieties under rural conditions. The farmers had training on farm management including brooding management, grower and layer management and backyard poultry farming. The farmers expressed willingness to adopt and expand the rural poultry farming. This program was coordinated by TSP Cell of this Directorate.

  
 
 

SCSP TRAINING ON 14-08-2019

Training to Scheduled caste farmers under SCSP on 14-08-2019

ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad organised one day training programme on “Backyard Poultry Rearing” to scheduled caste farmers on 14th August, 2019 at this Directorate under Schedule Caste Sub Plan (SCSP). Major aim of the training is to train the farmers to adopt backyard poultry rearing for improving the income and nutritional security of households. A total of 31 farmers (14 men and 17 women farmers) from Chinchalpet village, Vikarabad district participated in the programme. Dr.R.N.Chatterjee, Director, DPR interacted with the farmers and highlighted the advantage of rearing improved backyard chicken varieties developed by this Directorate towards improving the farmer’s income. Farmers were provided with training kit including extension literature in vernacular language on package of practices for rearing backyard chicken varieties under rural conditions. The farmers had training on farm management including brooding management, grower and layer management and backyard poultry farming. Independence Day 2019

73rd Independence Day Celebrated at ICAR-DPR

DPR, Hyderabad celebrated 73rd Independence Day on 15th August 2019. Dr. R.N.Chatterjee, Director of this Directorate hoisted the national flag and delivered a speech highlighting the achievements made by different sections of ICAR-DPR, AICRP-PB and PSP during the last year. He informed that a total of 19.4 lakhs of improved chicken germplasm was distributed from DPR, AICRP-PB and PSP centres during 2018-19. Tree plantation programme was organized and more than 200 tree saplings were planted by the staff in the premises of the institute. Scientific, Technical, Administrative, Supportive and contractual staff of this Directorate actively participated in the event.

                           

 

Brainstorming on Backyard Poultry

Brainstorming Meet on Upsacling Backyard Poultry held at ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad

ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad organized a “Brainstorming Meet on Upsacling Backyard Poultry to improve its share to total poultry production in India on 8-9th August 2019. Higher officials (Director, Additional Directors, Joint Director and Assistant Directors) from 9 state animal husbandry departments and 4 ATARI s (Directors and Principal Scientists) participated in the meeting

 Dr. J K Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries and Animal sciences), ICAR New Delhi was the chief guest of the function. He emphasized the importance of line departments and KVKs in disseminating the technologies developed by ICAR institutes to end users and farmers. He hoped that this kind of brainstorming meet will help in understanding the expectations and new challenges of various stakeholders of poultry industry and backyard poultry in particular. He applauded ICAR-DPR for initiating such meet to reach maximum numbers of users with technologies developed by the institute.     

Dr. R.S. Gandhi, ADG (Animal Production and Breeding) the guest of honour deliberated upon the various statistics of poultry development and how backyard poultry can help in doubling farmers income. 

Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad welcomed all dignitaries and delegates. He narrated in details the objectives of conducting this meet and how backyard poultry varieties developed by the Directorate is  improving soci-economic and nutritional status  of farmers across length and breadth of the country. He also narrated several success stories of varieties developed ICAR-DPR and AICRP centers on Poultry Breeding   like Vanaraja, Gramapriya, Srinidhi ,Pratpdhan, Himsmridhi, Jhaarsimetc.

Dr. C. R. Prasanna( IAS),  Director, Directorate of Veterinary Services, Chhattisgarh stated the objectives, status and constrains of poultry development in Chhattisgarh. He mentioned in brief the importance of quality germplsam, alternate feed ingredient and developing skilled work force through scientific training.

Director, Additional Directors and Deputy Directors of various state animal Husbandry Departments and Directors of ICAR-ATARI participated in two days meet.   

The programme was co-ordinated by Transfer of Technology section of the Directorate.
