ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad conducts Seminar on “Antimicrobial resistance”


A Seminar on “Antimicrobial resistance and its implications in poultry” was conducted on 31.7.2019 by ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad in collaboration with AP (Hyderabad) Chapter of Indian Poultry Science Association. Dr. K.M.L. Pathak, Former DDG (AS), ICAR has graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR welcomed the participants and introduced the theme of the Seminar. He narrated the contribution of antibiotics over the decades in disease control in poultry and emphasised the importance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and its implications.


Dr. K.M.L. Pathak, in his Chief Guest address, said that though the contribution of poultry to AMR is minimal, the sector is being unnecessarily blamed for the issue and stressed upon the need for taking up comprehensive study involving the private industry and also other livestock species for identifying the role of the respective sectors in the development of AMR. He suggested taking up awareness campaign on the issue for the general public and also the poultry farmers so that the precious antibiotic molecules are properly used for avoiding the development of resistance among the pathogenic bacteria.

   


Two invited lectures were delivered by Dr.
K.S. Prajapati, Prof. & Head (retd.), AAU, Anand and Dr. M.R. Reddy, Prl. Scientist, IVRI, Izatnagar. Dr. Reddy gave a talk on “Antibiotics in poultry production – the codex regulations, MRLs and their implications in development of antimicrobial resistance”. Dr. Reddy gave a detailed picture of antibiotic use in poultry production, the codex regulations, maximum residue levels in meat and eggs across globe and India and the associated areas of the topic.


This was followed by the talk on ““Antibiotic usage in poultry production and the possibilities for their reduction in view of antimicrobial resistance” by Dr. Prajapati. He informed that the last antibiotic molecule was discovered in 1987 and therefore the available molecules need to be judiciously used for preserving their efficacy. He gave an account of various antibiotic growth promoters, the development of cross resistance among various antibiotics and the mode of resistance development etc. He also spoke about the potential alternatives available, which need to be used in combination for ensuring satisfactory efficacy.


At the end, Dr. V.R. Reddy, Prof. & Head (retd.), ANGRAU, Hyderabad, the Guest of Honor for the Seminar, concluded the proceedings and gave the take home message on antibiotic use in conjunction with optimum management and nutrition.

A total of 98 participants attended the event, which included the Scientific and technical staff from DPR; faculty and PG/PhD students from PVNR Telangana Veterinary University, scientists from NRC on Meat, senior poultry professionals, representatives and field veterinarians from the poultry industry.

 
 
 
 

Training on Modern Poultry Management

Training Program on “Modern Poultry Management” for Established Agripreneurs" organized during 25 -28 June, 2019

Refresher Training Program on "Modern Poultry Management” for Established Agripreneurs was organized at ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad during 25-28 June, 2019 in collaboration with AC&ABC program, MANAGE, Hyderabad. A total of 14 Agripreneurs registered under AC&ABC program and 4 farmers participated in the training. Dr.R.N.Chatterjee, Director, DPR inaugurated the training program and interacted with the participants. Dr.Jabir Ali, Director (Centre for Knowledge Management, ICT and Mass Media) and Dr. P. Lakshmi Manohari, Asst Director (Ag. Extn.), MANAGE graced the occasion and interacted with participants with respect to AC&ABC Scheme. It was hands on practical training related to hatchery management, chick, brooder, grower and adult management, health management of the poultry flocks, feed formulation, economics of the poultry rearing and diversified poultry production. This program was funded by MANAGE, Hyderabad. Participants were quite satisfied and requested to conduct this kind of short training program for the benefit of the more agripreneurs and farmers.

 

 

TSP:Input Distribution, June-19

Inputs distribution to tribal farmers under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP), DPR, Hyderabad

Input distribution program under Tribal Sub Plan was organized at Kolamguda and Thatiguda villages, (Adilabad District) on 22-06-2019. A total of 13 tribal farmers were benefited. ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad introduced rural/ backyard chicken farming with improved chicken varieties with an aim to improve the living standards of tribal farmers. Team of Scientists and Officer of this Directorate interacted with tribal beneficiaries. Advantage of rearing improved backyard chicken varieties was explained to the tribal farmers. A total of 10 tribal beneficiaries of Kolamguda were provided with about 190 Gramapriya birds, feed and medicine kit. Two way cross birds  were distributed to 3 tribal beneficiaries of Thatiguda for field evaluation. As a new initiative for proper safeguarding of birds during night, Temporary night shelters were already provided to all the beneficiaries. Expert team also interacted with tribal farmers of Thatiguda village, who earlier undergone training on “Backyard Poultry Rearing” at this Directorate. About 17 farmers formed a farmer’s producer group and started rearing Vanaraja birds. Team monitored the performance of the birds and given suitable suggestions for scientific rearing to exploit the potential of this rural variety.

Poultry Waste Management Unit inaugurated

“Poultry Waste Management Unit" facility created at ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad

Director, ICAR-DPR inaugurated the "Poultry Waste Management Unit" facility on 14th June, 2019 in presence of all the staff members of the institute. This facility was created for sustainable management of poultry waste through composting. Concept of Poultry Waste Management Unit was initiated with an aim to overcome the major issues in waste management such as accumulation of large amount of wastes, especially manure and litter, causing major environmental problem. Expected outcome is to produce environmentally safe, sustainable and economical technology for sustainable management of poultry waste for the production of compost.
