FTF ITT TRAINING

ICAR-DPR organized International Training Programme under “Feed The Future India Triangular Training Programme (FTF ITT)” for executives of African and Asian Countries

ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad organized an International Training Programme on “Modern Poultry Management” for executives of African and Asian Countries under the “Feed The Future India Triangular Training Programme (FTF ITT)” during 1-15 May 2018 in collaboration with MANAGE, Hyderabad. A total of 29 participants from eight countries (Botswana-1, Kenya-6, Liberia-4, Malawi-3, Mongolia-6, Mozambique-1, Myanmar-3 and Uganda-5) attended the programme. The training programme was inaugurated by Dr. Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR in the presence of Mrs. V. Usha Rani, IAS, Director General, MANAGE and Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, DPR.

The training module included classroom lectures, practical sessions, group discussions, case studies and field visits. The participants were exposed to various aspects of poultry production including breeding, nutrition, health and management. Hands on sessions on hatchery management including chick handling and sexing; farm management including nursery management, grower and breeder management were conducted. The executives were trained on artificial insemination technology and practically carried out the AI. Two case studies from poultry industry highlighting growth from a small venture in to a big company, Chalimeda Feeds, Karimnagar and Lakshminarsimha poultry farms, Bibinagar, Telangana were discussed. The Chairmen of both the firms shared their successful journey with the participants. Four group discussions on important issues like rising feed cost, welfare issues, antibiotic resistance and backyard poultry were arranged with leading experts from industry and government organizations. Field visits were organized to poultry processing plant of Srinivasa Hatcheries group, Asia’s 2^nd largest feed manufacturing plant of Suguna Foods Pvt. Ltd. and free range poultry of Bavoji Tanda, Mahaboobnagar district, Telangana (an adopted tribal village of ICAR-DPR). In addition, the participants were exposed to the research activities undertaken in agriculture and allied sectors in other local ICAR institutes, NRC on Meat, IIMR, IIRR, Veterinary College, Rajendranagar and MANAGE.

Apart from the curricular activities, the participants were taken to places of cultural and historical importance in Hyderabad city. A cultural evening was organized where the participants displayed their traditional dances in national attire. The Indian classical and folk dances were also showcased during the cultural evening by professional dancers.

At the end, each participant presented ‘Back at work plan’ wherein the procedures or methods of implementing the knowledge acquired during training in the next six months in their respective countries were presented and discussed. ICAR-DPR will monitor and offer suggestions for implementing the Back at work plan projects in their respective countries.

The valedictory programme was graced by Mission Director, USAID-India, His Excellency Mark A.White and the High Commissioners of Kenya and Malawi. Mrs. V. Usha Rani, IAS, Director General, MANAGE, Dr. M.V.L.N. Raju, Director Incharge, ICAR-DPR and staff of both the institutes attended the programme. Dr. U. Rajkumar, Programme co-ordinator presented a brief report on the training programme. The training executives were distributed certificates and mementos. The training executives expressed their satisfaction on the content of the training programme and impressed the dignitaries on implementation of knowledge and skill acquired during the programme in their respective countries.

Workshop on IPR

Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights

The ITMU, ICAR-DPR organized a Workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)” on 26^th March 2018. The Director, scientists and technical staff of the Directorate participated in the workshop.The purpose of the workshop was to enhance awareness about Intellectual Property Rights for effective IP management.

A Guest lecture was delivered by Dr. Rijuta Garapaty, registered Indian Patent Agent, Founder Partner, Avid-Invent, IP services Hyderabad. In the lecture, the speaker gave an overview of IPR and detailed picture of several types of IPR with special emphasis to patents and the related issues.The presentation was followed by interactive session in which the participants got their queries cleared by the Guest speaker.At the end, Director, ICAR-DPR threw light on other aspects of IPR and the issues faced by the Innovators and how they can be overcome.Finally,Dr.M.V.L.N.Raju, I/C ITMU delivered vote of thanks.

The staff members of this institute participated in forming the human chain in front of the institute gate outside the campus with the objective to spread awareness among the general public for keeping the environment clean.

Science & Foundation day

Science Day celebrated and Farmers-Scientists Interface organized at ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad

ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad celebrated Science Day on 28^th February 2018 and its 31^st Foundation Day on 1^st March 2018, respectively. Dr. Subeer S. Majumdar, Director, National Institute of Animal Biotechnology, Hyderabad graced the Science Day celebration as chief guest. In his address, he emphasized strengthening of Biotechnology research especially in the area of genome editing and transgenisis to cope with emerging and future challenges of food security, vaccine and therapeutic development. Shri P. Ashok, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Rajendranagar Sub-Division, Cyberabad and Prof. K. Kondal Reddy, Registrar of PV Narsimha Rao Telangana Veterinary University were the guests of honour on the occasion. Shri Ashok appreciated role of the ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research in development and dissemination of rural varieties of chicken and emphasized that neglected rural chicken varieties need to be conserved and improved for the benefit of the rural farmers. Prof. K. Kondal Reddy appreciated the role of AICRP in developing commercial and rural chicken varieties for intensive, semi-intensive and free range poultry farming for nutritional and economic security of the farmers and emphasized strengthening of inter-Institutional collaboration to share technologies and facilities available across the Institutes for the benefit of the scientific fraternity in the Country.

National Science Day celebrated on 28^th February 2018 at the Institute

Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director-DPR presided over the Science Day programme and briefed about the salient achievements of the Institute including future flagship research programmes. He also narrated the significance of celebrating the National Science Day programme in the Country highlighting the research work conducted by Sir C.V. Raman which led to discovery of Raman Effect. At the outset of National Science Day programme, Dr. T.K. Bhattacharya, National Fellow welcomed the honourable Guests and other delegates and mentioned about the activities of the Institute. At the end, Dr. Leslie Leo Prince, Sr. Scientist proposed vote of thanks. On the eve of National Science Day celebration, an exhibition was organized by the Institute to showcase new technologies and chicken varieties developed at the Institute where about 200 school children from different Schools of Hyderabad visited the Exhibition stall, Laboratories and Poultry farms. The students have been educated about the benefits of poultry eggs and meat for mitigating our body requirement of animal proteins.

On occasion of Farmers-Scientist Interface during 31^st Institute Foundation day programme, Dr. R.S. Gandhi, ADG (AP&B) graced the occassion as chief guest and Dr. R.P. Sharma, former Director , PDP and Dr. S. Vaithyanathan , acting Director, ICAR-NRC on Meat, Hyderabad were guests of honour. Dr Gandhi appreciated the institute for its contribution in ensuring livelihood security of rural population in the country. He highlighted that rural poultry can be likened with ATM (any time money), which is much more resilient to natural calamities and thus play vital role in reducing farmers distress. He also emphasized for working on characterization of non-descript chickens within specific time limit, development of designer meat and eggs, disease surveillance, waste management, development of alternate to antibiotic growth promoters, etc.

Farmers-Scientists Interface organized on the eve of 31^st Foundation day of the Institute

Dr. R.P. Sharma recalled contributions of previous directors, scientists and staff on development of popular backyard chicken varieties like Vanaraja which has been widely accepted across the country. Dr. S. Vaithyanathan congratulated DPR for its foundation day and highlighted the role of this Institute in Nation building. Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director-DPR presided over the Foundation Day programme and briefed about the service being provided by the Institute for the benefit of the farmers of the country. On this occasion, a total of 40 farmers from the Baoji Thanda Village of Mahaboobnagar district of Telangana state participated at the Interface. The farmers informed about the benefits achieved by rearing the improved chicken varieties developed at this Institute. They expressed satisfaction over the service on backyard poultry farming including nutritional and health management practices received time to time from the Institute. At this Occasion, two books entitled ‘Improved Chicken Varieties’ and ‘Gramin kukkat palan ke naya ayam’ were released. At the beginning of the programme, Dr. S.S. Paul, Principal Scientist welcomed the delegates for Foundation day celebration. At the end, Dr. A. Kannan, Principal Scientist proposed the vote of thanks.

MANAGE TRAINING

ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research Organized “Certified Livestock Advisor Program on Poultry” training Programme for Animal Husbandry Officers

ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad organized a Training Programme on “Certified Livestock Advisor Program on Poultry (Module – II)” during 24 January – 7 February 2018, in collaboration with MANAGE, Hyderabad, sponsored by Govt of India . A total of 25 Animal Husbandry officers from 13 states attended the programme. The trainees were exposed to various aspects of poultry production such as breeding, nutrition, management and health care. The training module included theory, practical demonstrations and hands on experience on farm and hatchery operations. A field visit to a commercial poultry unit of 1 lakh layer capacity, feed mill and modern slaughter facilities at NRC on Meat, Hyderabad was arranged for the benefit of the participants. The participants expressed satisfaction on the module of the training. Smt Usha Rani, IAS, DG, MANAGE and DR.R.N.Chatterjee, Director DPR interacted with the participants and expressed need for arranging more number of trainings in the poultry and other allied fields for the benefit of the different stake holders.
