ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad celebrated its 37th Foundation Day

ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad celebrated its 37th Institute Foundation Day on 1st March 2024. Dr. P. Chandra Shekara, Director General, MANAGE, Hyderabad, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, and Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, presided over the function. The foundation day programme of ICAR-DPR started with an ICAR song and the lighting of a lamp.  Dr. P. Chandra Shekara, DG, MANAGE during his address, appreciated the contribution of ICAR-DPR in the growth and development of poultry production in the country, particularly backyard poultry production. The role of this directorate in rural chicken variety development, dissemination of improved chicken varieties, technology development, and extension activities across the country, was appreciated. He emphasised the need to give more training to the farmers and translate the research to the field level for improving rural livelihoods and nutritional security.

On this occasion, a booklet entitled “ICAR-DPR Backyard Chicken Germplasm: Contribution and Impact authored by Drs. Vijaykumar, U. Rajkumar, SV Rama Rao and RN Chatterjee” was released. The chief guest distributed the prizes to the winners of the sports competitions organized for the staff of the institute. 

Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR presided over the function and highlighted the role and contribution of ICAR-DPR in the poultry sector of the country through its various activities. He also appraised the house about the long association of ICAR-DPR with the MANAGE, Hyderabad and elaborated on the evolution of ICAR-DPR as well as its present status with well-furnished labs and a regional centre at Bhubaneswar. He also informed the house about the various national and international training programmes organised by ICAR-DPR and sponsored by MANAGE and briefed about the salient achievements of the institute, including flagship research programmes.

Earlier, Dr. S.S. Paul, Head, Division of Poultry Nutrition, Health, and Physiology, welcomed the dignitaries. The programme ended with the formal vote of thanks proposed by Dr. A. Kannan, Principal Scientist and Chairman of the organising committee. Around 75 participants were present in the programme.

DAPSC programme at TamilNadu

Input distribution programme at Pazhayanur (Chengalpattu District, TN) and Nalamputhur (Cuddalore District, TN) villages under DAPSC programme 

ICAR-DPR has been implementing the DAPSC programme in different villages of Tamil Nadu for the past two years to improve the livelihood of SC farmers. Input distribution and on-field training programmes were held at Pazhayanur village (Chengalpattu District) on 29th February 2024 and Nalamputhur (Cuddalore District) on 1st March 2024. In both villages, the DAPSC scheme was explained to the beneficiaries (SC farmers), and they received brief training on rearing poultry birds under backyard farming. Additionally, practical tips on feeding and health care management of birds were provided. To properly safeguard birds during the night from predatory attacks and the cold climate, the Directorate distributed 200 night shelters (100 in each village) to 200 SC families. Dr. M. Shanmugam, Senior Scientist, coordinated the programme. The programme was attended by elected representatives and farmers of both the villages.

AAHP-2024: 5th Biennial Poultry Health Conference and National Symposium on  Poultry Health: Current Challenges and Future Strategies” organized by ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad  

The 5th Biennial Poultry Health Conference and National Symposium (AAHP-2024) of the Association of Avian Health Professionals (AAHP) was organized by ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad (ICAR-DPR) in collaboration with the Association of Avian Health Professionals, Hyderabad during 23rd and 24th February 2024. The theme of the conference was “Poultry Health: Current Challenges and Future Strategies”.  Dr R N Srinivasa Gowda, Former Vice Chancellor KVAFSU, Bidar was the Chief Guest, and Dr M S Oberoi, Former Regional Advisor, FAO was the Guest of Honour. Dr J M Kataria, President, AAHP presided over the function.  Dr R N Chatterjee, chairman organizing Committee and Director, ICAR-DPR welcomed the Chief Guest, dignitaries, and all the delegates. Lifetime achievement awards for the years 2020, 2022 and 2024 were conferred on  Dr G C Mohanty, Dr J L Vegad and Dr M S Oberoi, respectively for their outstanding contributions to the poultry health research. Further three poultry veterinarians Dr R K Phatak, Dr M A Mujeeb Ather and Dr Previn Punnoose were honored with the Best Poultry Veterinarian award. The conference was attended by around 300 delegates from different parts of the country. Academicians and researchers from different ICAR institutes, Universities and Industries presented lead papers on pertinent subject areas including Avian influenza, Newcastle disease, Fowl adenovirus, Marek’s disease, Fowl cholera, AMR, Food Safety, Diagnostic, next-generation sequencing, vaccine quality, hatchery vaccinations etc. Further, 15 oral presentations, three case reports, 9 young scientist award presentations and 35 poster presentations were made by scientists, students and poultry veterinarians during the two day conference.  A scientist industry interface meeting was conducted, where several important matters on poultry health were deliberated upon.

Dr V Ravindar Reddy, Former Vice Chancellor, PVNRTVU, Hyderabad graced the function as the Chief Guest in the valedictory function. Dr R P Sharma Former Director, ICAR DPR, was the Guest of Honor, Dr J M Kataria, Present AAHP, Dr R N Chatterjee, Chairman Organizing committee & Director, DPR,  Dr U Rajkumar, Convener and Dr M R Reddy Organizing Secretary were present in the valedictory function. Several awards including Best Oral Presentation, Best Poster Presentation, Young Scientist Awards and Best Case-study awards were given to participants, especially to encourage the young brains.  The conference ended with a vote of thanks from  Dr U Rajkumar, convener of AAHP-2024.

Empowering Tribal Communities: Duck Farming Input Distribution and Training Programs in Kandhamala, Odisha

Input distribution and training programs were conducted in various tribal villages across the Kandhamala district in Odisha from January 8 to 10, 2024, as part of the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) program by the Regional Station (RS), ICAR-DPR, Bhubaneswar. Input distribution program to tribal farmers of Alami village was held on 8th January 2024 and about 25 tribal farmers benefitted. Each beneficiary was provided with 20 ducklings and 20 kg of duck starter feed. Dr SK Patel, Chief District Veterinary Officer (Kandhamala) was the chief guest. Dr SK Bhanja, Head, RS, Dr A Dora, Deputy Director (Animal Health), Dr SK Sahoo, Principal Scientist and Dr MK Padhi, Pr. Scientist & Nodal officer, TSP graced the occasion and distributed the inputs and interacted with the farmers.

A training programme on backyard duck farming was organized at Timudibandha block on 9th January 2024.  The program, led by Dr SK Bhanja, Dr SK Sahoo, Dr R Sahoo (Block Veterinary Officer - Timudibandha), Dr A Das (Block Veterinary Officer - Kotagada), and Dr MK Padhi, provided insights to 50 tribal farmers on various aspects of duck farming, including management, feeding, health care, and the profitability of duck farming. Farmers were also informed about the TSP program.

Input distribution program to tribal farmers of Timudibandha block was held on 10th January 2024 and about 25 tribal farmers benefitted. Each beneficiary was provided with 20 ducklings of 3-4 weeks old and 20 kg of duck starter feed. Dr SK Bhanja, Dr R Sahoo, Dr A Das, Dr SK Sahoo, and Dr MK Padhi graced the occasion, distributed inputs, and interacted with the farmers. The TSP team also visited Garbanda village to gather feedback and body weight data of ducks from tribal farmers who had received inputs under the program on 23 December 2023. The team noted positive growth of the birds. Dr MK Padhi, Principal Scientist and Nodal Officer, coordinated the program.
