DDG(AS) Visit to DPR on 22-10-2021

DDG (Animal Science) visits ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad

B. N. Tripathi, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR, New Delhi visited the ICAR- Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad on 22nd October 2021. During his interaction with scientists of the Directorate, DDG lauded the contribution of ICAR-DPR in the improvement of poultry production in the country particularly the backyard poultry production through the dissemination of improved chicken varieties throughout the country. Dr. Tripathi opined that everyone must be ready for accepting the challenges of the present-day poultry sector and meet the stakeholders’ expectations. He identified 10 actionable points that need to be given priority in the coming five years. DDG (AS) advised to conduct regular interface meetings with the industry and formulate the projects based on the industry needs. He also advised to take up collaborative projects with industry and other Institutions. Earlier Dr. B. N. Tripathi, DDG(AS) inaugurated a Bioinformatics laboratory building of this Directorate. Dr. Praveen Malik, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, DAHD, Dr. A. K. Tyagi, ADG (ANP), Dr. S. B. Barbuddhe, Director, ICAR–NRC Meat and other dignitaries also graced the occasion. Dignitaries also participated in the special Swachtha campaign on the occasion of the 152nd Birth Anniversary of the Father of our Nation and planted fruit trees in the campus. Dr. A. K. Tyagi, ADG (ANP) appreciated the contribution of the institute to the poultry sector. Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR highlighted the research achievements of the institute. He also narrated the future thrust areas for which the Institute has prepared the road map in the EFC.

Special Swachtha Campaign (Mahatma Gandhiji’s Birth Anniversary)

A special Swachtha Campaign was started at ICAR-Directorate on Poultry Research on 2nd October 2021 on the occasion of the 152nd Birth Anniversary of the Shri. Mahatma Gandhiji, the Father of our Nation.  A month long activity on Swachtha will be organised from  02nd to 31st October 2021.

In the Swachtha programme, the Director and staff participated actively and cleaned the premises near the guest house. The single use plastics were collected and disposed off in a proper manner. The tree leaves were segregated and sent for composting. The Director also planted fruit bearing trees to enhance the greenery surrounding the guest house. Dr. K.S. Rajaravindra, Senior Scientist & Nodal Officer, Swachh Bharat Committee organized the programme.

A special Swachtha Campaign was organized on 05.10.2021 in the premises of Government primary school of the Bandlaguda Jagir, Gandipet Mandal of RangaReddy district, Telangana. The staff of the directorate and the school actively participated in the Swachtha activity and cleaned the premises. The students were also given awareness about the open defection free status in the villages under the Swachtha programme. The importance of using toilets in combating several food and water borne diseases are explained to the school children. The need for segregation of waste into recyclable and non-recyclable is also emphasised for protection of the environment.

A special National Swachtha Campaign was organized on 12.10.2021 at Kothur Village (Mahbubnagar district, Telangana).  The staff of the directorate, the Sarpanch of the village, about 70 villagers and the school students were participated in the Swachtha activity and cleaned the common area & road. Dr Rajkumar highlighted about the open defection free status in the villages, importance of using toilets in combating several food and water borne diseases. He also explained about waste to wealth creation ideas and need for segregation of waste into recyclable and non-recyclable materials for protection of the environment. Dr Prakash expressed thanks to all the villagers assembled for the progrmme along with elected members of the village. Dr.Vijaykumar coordinated the program.

ICAR- Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad celebrated Mahila Kisan Divas in the campus on 15th October, 2021. In this programme around 30 women participated. Dr. SP Yadav, Principal Scientist welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of Mahila Kisan Divas. The Incharge Director Dr BLN Reddy during his address highlighted the role of the farm women in Indian agriculture. He also motivated the women to adopt the improved technologies for enhancing their farm income. Dr Anand laxmi, Principal Scientist of this Directorate emphasised on the importance of the women in agriculture and animal husbandry. The women including the scientific staff of the Institute actively participated in the programme and expressed their views.

As a part of World Food Day Celebration on 16 October 2021, a lecture on "Alleviating food security through inclusive nutritional merits: A case of Millets" was delivered by Dr B Dayakar Rao, Pr Scientist and CEO, Technology Business Incubator (Nutrihub), ICAR-IIMR,Hyderabad. He has given insight about food security, challenges in achieving it, Impact of climate on agriculture, malnutrition, balanced diet, etc. He also gave an insight about the Global hunger index, zero hunger and the ways to achieve zero hunger. He also emphasized the importance of nutrition for our kids. He pointed out the inadequate nutrition and health status of Indians even when we are having food surplus as well as a major exporter. He also suggested millets to be important food grains in alleviating the hidden hunger of the people as well in alleviating the diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, etc. A total of 30 people joined in the zoom meeting of the webinar and appreciated the program. Dr MVLN Raju, Pr. Scientist, ICAR-DPR appreciated the talk and Dr Jayakumar S delivered the vote of thanks for the program.

A special National Swachtha Campaign was organized on 22.10.2021 at ICAR-DPR Hyderabad Campus. DDG (AS) ICAR, Dr B N Tripathi was the chief guest of the event and other dignitaries were Dr A K Tyagi, ADG ICAR; Dr P Malik, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, Government of India; Dr R N Chatterjee, Director ICAR-DPR Hyderabad and Dr S B Barbuddhe, Director ICAR-NRC Meat. They were participated in plantation work at campus along with staff of ICAR-DPR and ICAR- NRC Meat. A total of about 40 persons participated in the event.

A special Swachtha Campaign was organized on 25.10.2021 in the premises of Government primary school of the Hanuman Nagar, Rajendra Nagar Mandal of Ranga Reddy district, Telangana. Awareness regarding the open defection free status in the villages under the Swachtha programme was explained to the students. They were also enlightened about the ill effects of use of single use plastic in their day to day life. The importance of using toilets in combating several food and water borne diseases are described to the school children. The need for segregation of waste into recyclable and non-recyclable is also emphasised for protection of the environment and also development of wealth from waste was explained. The staff of the directorate and the school and school students actively participated in the Swachtha activity and cleaned the premises.

 A Swachtha walk commemorating the 152nd Birth Anniversary of the Father of our Nation Shri. Mahatma Gandhiji was organized on 26.10.2021 near the main entrance of the Directorate. The Director and staff of the directorate took the walk singing the Swachtha slogans for creating awareness on Swachtha to the local public.

Inputs to Tribal farmers in Telangana

ICAR-DPR distributes inputs for backyard poultry rearing to tribal farmers of Adilabad District, Telangana

ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad distributed Improved backyard chicken varieties (Vanaraja and Gramapriya) to Gond tribes of Tummaguda village (Indervalli Mandal), Adilabad district (Telangana) on 25th September 2021 under the DAPSTC programme. The programme aimed at improving the livelihood and nutritional security of remote tribal families through enhanced egg and meat production. Different inputs for backyard poultry rearing including the grown-up birds (825), night shelters (100), feeders (100), waterers (100) and feed (1600kgs) were distributed to 100 farmers to establish a small backyard unit as a subsidiary income provider. Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR addressed the farmers and explained about the role of backyard poultry in sustainable rural livelihoods and doubling farmers income by 2022. Peoples representatives from local bodies actively participated in the programme and appreciated the efforts taken by the Directorate for the upliftment of the tribal farmers. The programme was attended by 200 tribal farmers including women in large numbers. Wearing masks, maintaining social distancing and SOP as per COVID guidelines was followed. Team of Scientists of this Directorate interacted with tribal beneficiaries and elaborated about scientific rearing of rural improved chicken varieties to obtain maximum benefit from the birds. Dr. M.V.L.N. Raju, Dr. U. Rajkumar, Dr. L.L.L.Prince, Dr. B. Prakash, Dr. K.S. Rajaravindra and Dr. S. Jayakumar from the Directorate participated in the programme. The programme was organized and coordinated by the TSP cell of the Directorate.

KRITAGYA- A National level Hackathon on Precision and Economical Animal Farming

Indian Council of Agricultural Research under its National Agricultural Higher Education Project and with the support of its Animal Science Division is organizing Hackathon 2.0 ‘’KRITAGYA on promoting ‘Innovations for Precision and Economical Animal Farming’. 

 

Increasing drudgery in animal farming, precise predictions of livestock and poultry diseases, lack of technology intervention in disease reporting and delay in disease diagnosis, unavailability of suitable technologies in animal transportation etc. are some of emerging challenges faced by livestock sector in recent decade. India is at a point where it needs to not only find ways to promote technology enabled livestock management but also ensure effective adoption of such emerging technologies. 

 

KRITAGYA explains: KRI for Krishi meaning AgricultureTA for Taknik meaning Technology and GYA for Gyan meaning Knowledge. Students, faculties and innovators/entrepreneurs from any university / technical institution across the country can apply and participate in the event in the form of a group. This group will comprise of maximum 4 participants, with not more than one faculty and / or more than one innovator or entrepreneur. Participating students can collaborate with local start-ups, students from technology institutes and can win up-to INR 5 Lakhs. The registration for event will be starting from 15th September 2021 onwards.

During 2020-21, NAHEP in association with Agricultural Engineering Division of ICAR organized Hackathon 1.0 to promote the innovation in Farm Mechanisation. The event witnessed immense response across the country where more than 784 teams i.e., ~3,000 participants actively involved in the event. At national level, out of 25 shortlisted teams, 4 teams were awarded with a cash prize of Rs. 9 lakhs for  KRITAGYA AgTech Hackathon 2020-21.  This event is also extending the support to winners for further development in their concept propositions, its scalability and future plan in collaboration with Agri Business Incubators, MSMEs and other investors through support of ICAR. 

ICAR commenced National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP) with the assistance of World Bank (WB) in November 2017.  The overall objective of NAHEP is to support participating Agricultural Universities (AUs) and ICAR in providing more relevant and higher quality education to the students.

 

Taking forward the vision of our Hon’ble PM through National Education Policy-2020, this event will give an opportunity to the students / faculties / entrepreneurs / innovators and others to showcase their innovative approaches & technology solutions to promote innovation for Precision and Economical Animal Farming in India. Such initiatives under NAHEP along with Animal Science Division of ICAR will also help in enhancing the learning capabilities, innovations and disruptive solutions, employability and entrepreneurial drive-in livestock sector, and hence will boost the adoption of technology enabled solutions in the country

Campaign Nutri-garden & tree plantation

Campaign on Nutri garden and tree plantation celebrated at

ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research

A mega campaign on Nutri garden and tree plantation drive was organized at ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad on 17th September 2021 on the occasion of International Year of Millets 2023. Several fruit bearing plants were planted inside the campus by the Director and staff. A total of 28 Girl students from Cherish Foundation, Kismatpur, Hyderabad were invited to the Directorate and provided healthy and balanced food in the lunch. Twenty two women farmers participated in the programme. On this occasion, a lecture on Nutricereals and their importance was delivered by Dr. K.S. Rajaravindra, Senior Scientist of this Directorate. The Chief Guest of the function, Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR stressed about the role of millets and nutricereals in leading a healthy life and also for diversifying agriculture with millet crops for better land use and improved livelihoods of farmers. Fruit bearing plants were distributed to the girl students and the women farmers during the ceremony. Seed packets of different vegetable crops were also distributed to the participants. The programme was coordinated by the Swachh Bharat Committee of the Directorate under the chairmanship of Dr. K.S. Rajaravindra, Senior Scientist.
