DG, ICAR inaugurates Trainees Hostel at ICAR- Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad

Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE & Director General, ICAR inaugurated the Trainees Hostel at ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad on  22nd September, 2018. Dr. Joykrushna Jena, DDG (Fisheries & Animal Science)  was also present on the occasion. Prof. V. Prabhakar Rao, former Vice Chancellor, SVVU, Tirupati; Prof. A. Padma Raju, former Vice Chancellor, ANGRAU, Hyderabad; Directors of local ICAR institutes, Officials from CPWD and other distinguished dignitaries graced the occasion.

   

Later, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra addressed the scientists and staff of the Directorate. He appreciated the activities of the Directorate in developing several rural chicken varieties. He also accentuated to conduct research in basic sciences exploring the genomic variation among different breeds and chicken populations. He also emphasized that genetic improvement obtained by utilizing the traditional breeding programes may be augmented by incorporation of Genomic Selection/Genotype Based Selection/Marker Assisted Selection in the breeding programmes. He also narrated that the utilization of the markers/SNPs in poultry breeding program will be successful because of opportunity of obtaining large number of progenies in a short duration, maintaining larger population size at ease and determination of marker-QTL close linkage relationship. 

 

Dr. Mohapatra in his address directed the Scientists to develop a region-wise action plan for the country for development of backyard poultry. He stressed upon to study the feasibility, economics, socio-economic status of the farmers, and involve KVKs and entrepreneurs in developing the suitable models to achieve the target of doubling the farmers’ income by 2022. Dr. Mohapatra highlighted the importance of indigenous chicken breeds and advised to take measures for their effective utilization and promotion. Later, Dr. Mohapatra released an Institute publication ‘Manual on Serology in Poultry Health’ authored by T.R. Kannaki, E. Priyanka and N.R. Dhanutha.

Earlier, Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad welcomed all the dignitaries and highlighted the significant achievements of the Institute. He also appraised the house about the contribution of the AICRP on Poultry Breeding and Poultry Seed Project centres in development of chicken varieties utilizing local germplasm and upliftment of the economy of the rural marginal farmers through rearing of these chicken varieties. At the end, Dr. M.V.L.N. Raju, Pr. Scientist proposed the vote of thanks.
