ICAR-ILRI Collaborative Project launched at ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad

ICAR-ILRI collaborative project on ‘Backyard Poultry Genomics’ launched on 29th  August, 2019 at ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad. The project launching program was graced by Dr. Habibar Rahman, Regional Representative, South Asia and Mrs. Roma Oli, Senior Administrative officer, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR presided over the function. Dr. H. Rahman briefed about the genesis and importance of the project. He also highlighted the importance of native chicken breeds and their improvement for the benefit of rural poultry farmers. He was optimistic about the project outcome which will help in improving the productivity of the native chicken breeds using modern scientific approaches. The project is being executed by Dr. Olivier Hanotte and Dr. Dessie Tadelle (ILRI, Nairobi), Dr. T.K. Bhattacharya, Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Dr. S.P. Yadav, and Dr. Chandan Paswan (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad and Dr. Anil Rai, and Dr. A.R. Rao (ICAR-IASRI, New Delhi). Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR briefed about the Institute activities and narrated the role of native chicken in uplifting socioeconomic and nutritional status of rural people across India. Mrs. Roma Oli, Senior Administrative Officer, ILRI informed about the modalities and logistics in executing ILRI funded projects. She also deliberated the role of ILRI in enhancing food security through adopting scientific programmes across the Globe. At the outset, Dr. T.K. Bhattacharya, (Principal Investigator of the project, India) welcomed all the dignitaries and briefed about the knowledge gap, objectives and plan of work including time lines of the project. The programme was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Chandan Paswan, Senior Scientist.
